Ferguson Performance Garners Mixed Reactions
Blackpool achieved safety in the championship despite a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Charlton on the final day of the season. This was largely down to the 2-0 win over Wigan – their only victory in the last five matches – in the penultimate weekend of the season. There have been mixed reactions to the performance of manager Barry Ferguson. He has helped the club stay in the division in a player-manager caretaker role. However, the former Everton midfielder states that he is unsure about the future at the club next season.
Ferguson was appointed as the replacement for Paul Ince, who has started a few months ago. Since taking over, he has been unable to totally alleviate the relegation troubles surrounding the club. It was only because of the win over Charlton that they have managed to survive in the division. They finished the season two points above the relegation zone. There has been a lot of discontent from the fans towards chairman Karl Oyston. Even though this has been a very difficult season, Ferguson has stated that he still wants to become a manager.
His contract runs out at the end of the season. He says that he will be making a decision on his future with the next month.
"It probably won't be at Blackpool if I'm going to play on, but I'll make that decision mid-June. There's no meetings planned with the chairman. I'm getting an operation soon on my ankle and I don't know whether I am going to play on yet. I want to be a manager, I've decided that. It's not scared me wanting to be a manager. I've loved it. I'm just thankful for Blackpool giving me the chance,” said Ferguson. Blackpool went 17 matches without a victory this season before managing to survive.
